Special Education

I chose to do my wiki on Special Education programs in the United States. I chose this topic because I am thinking about working in the special education field, and there is always a need for special education teachers, so I was wondering what kind of different programs there were.

The Top 5 Things I Learned:

1. There are two different models to identify students with special needs. There is the discrepancy model and a response to intervention model. In the discrepancy model, a students gets special educational services for their specific learning disability, but they only recieve this if the student has at least a normal intelligence, and the student is below what is expected of a student with his or her same IQ. The response to intervention model identifies children who are having a hard time at school in the first couple years and they give those children additional assistance, which most the time is being a part of a reading remediation program. After this program they are told if the child has a learning disability or not.

2. Children that are in need of special education help receive an IEP. An IEP is an individualized education plan. It is designed to meet the specific need to each child.

3. There are 4 different categories of approaches that schools use to provide special education services to children. These categories include; Inclusion, Mainstreaming, Segregation, and Exclusion.

4. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is a law that governs how states and public school provide education to special needs children. This law requires that all students with special needs be provided with a free appropriate public education in a least restrictive environment that is appropriate to the student's specific needs.

5. In the United States mostly all government run schools use the inclusion model. Three out of five students with academic learning challenges spend the majority of their time in the classroom.

I liked this video a lot. It gives a slimpse of what a special education teacher has to do in the classroom, and on a daily basis. I give this video a "4 out of 5" because i believe it does a good job of showing the everyday challenges a teacher faces. It tells us what a special education teacher should be like. It also shows how rewarding the job is as well.

This video doesn't have factual information in it, but i thouroughly enjoyed watching it, and i believe that most my classmates will as well. It was more of a "feel good video" rather than a video with a lot of facts in it. That is why i give this video a "3 out of 10". I do recommend that everybody watches it though because it will make you feel good after watcing it.

This video talks about inclusion, which is one of the things that i learned in doing my research. This video shows the benefits for inclusion. It doesn't have factual information on inclusion, but it does show the benefits of it. It is definitely a promoter of inclusion. It is very persuasive and I believe that after people watch this video they will be for inclusion as well, so i give it a "3 out of 5".

I gave this video a "5 out of 5". If people look at just one video on my page, I would recommend that they watch this one. It's very interseting, factual, and true. It shows one boy that was put in a regular classroom under inclusion. He does well in the classroom, and I believe it shows how good inclusion is for children.

This video is a news interview about learning disabilities. They talk about what a learning disability is, and how common they are among children. They also talk about the different types of learning disabilities, and what teachers and parents can do to help children with disabilities. I gave this video a "5 out of 5" because it has lots of good, helpful, information.

The video above focuses on mainly austism. The video discusses what educators do for children with autism, which is an IEP. It talks about how parents tend to react to an IEP plan, and also how parents should react. This video is a must watch for any parent or anyone close to a child that has autism, or a child that is on an IEP. I gave this video a "5 out of 5".

I gave this slideshow a "5 out of 5". It has tons of valuable information on how to diagnose a child with a learning disablilty, and what to do once they are diagnosed. I would recommend that everyone looks at this slideshow, and uses it for a valuable resource for information.

This video was very good. I enjoyed it and got lots if useful information from it. I would recommend that anybody who is going to be working in a special education watch this video. It is a very old video, it is from 1992, but it is still full of very good information. This video gives an overview of what teachers can do in a classroom to make teaching special education students easier.
